TMG’s study of lateral moves in Texas revealed 40 partner and counsel moves in February 2023 compared to 35 moves in January 2023. Twenty-two of those moves occurred in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with 11 in Houston, six in Austin and two in San Antonio. Twenty-three of the movers came from private practice, with three coming out of government, three from in-house positions and one from a non-profit.

Seven separate firms reported multiple moves during the month. One group move was reported—a Banking Litigation group that opened the Dallas office of Hinshaw & Culbertson; that group previously worked at Akerman. Other firms reporting at least two lateral hires included:

  • Barnes & Thornburg (Dallas, Houston)
  • Greenberg Traurig (Houston)
  • Jackson Walker (Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth)
  • Littler Mendelson (Dallas, Houston)
  • Reed Smith (Dallas, Houston)

Fourteen of the 40 lawyers (35 percent) were women, with four entering as partners. That compared to 9 of the 26 men who joined their new firms as partners.

Banking was the leading practice area represented, with 9 practitioners. Other active practice areas included:

  • Intellectual Property (5)
  • Labor & Employment (5)
  • Litigation (4)
  • Tax (3)
  • Corporate (3)
