This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, please contact TMG’s Steve Nelson (snelson@tmg-dc.com) or Dave Ris (dris@tmg-dc.com).

As anticipated, lateral hiring increased significantly in September, with 71 moves reported, the most in a month since May. That number was far higher than September 2020, when 35 moves were reported, and virtually identical to September 2019, when 72 moves were reported.

After a lull in the summer, hiring from government agencies increased in September, with 13 of those hires. Seven moves were reported from in-house positions, with one additional lateral coming from an educational post.

Only one group move was reported in September, a two-partner FDA group that moved from Hogan Lovells to Sidley Austin. On the other hand, 11 other firms reported multiple hires:

Twenty- three of the 71 moves (32.4 percent) were by women, but only 11 joined as partners. That contrasted with 33 out of 48 men who joined their new firms as partners.

In terms of practice area, Intellectual Property was the most active practice area, with 9 moves. Other active practice areas included Corporate (7), Banking/Finance (7), Litigation (5), White Collar/Investigations (5), Health Care (5), FDA (4), and Antitrust (4).
