This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please click here.

After a slow end to 2022, the lateral market became quite active in January, as 78 partner and counsel moves were reported, up from 25 in December and 49 in November. However, the amount of moves last month was slightly lower than in January 2022, when 83 were reported.

It continued to be a busy market for government laterals, as 17 moves from government were reported, up from 11 in December, There were also eight moves from in-house positions and three from consulting.

There were five group moves reported in January, including Polsinelli’s hiring of five partners from the now-defunct AMS Trade. Other groups that moved were a corporate group that moved from Seyfarth Shaw to Brown Rudnick, an intellectual property group that moved from DLA Piper to Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, a large group of healthcare lawyers who moved from Troutman Pepper to Goodwin Procter (including two partners in DC), and an advertising litigation group that moved from Venable to Steptoe & Johnson. Other firms reporting multiple moves in January were:

Twenty nine of the 78 lawyers (37.2 percent) were women, with just over half (15) entering as partners. That compared to 86 percent of the men who joined their new firms as partners.

For the second consecutive month, White Collar/Investigations was the leading practice area represented, as 10 practitioners moved laterally. Other active practice areas included:
