TMG’s monthly study of lateral moves in Texas revealed 23 partner and counsel moves in May 2023, the exact same number as in April. Twelve of those moves occurred in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with eight in Houston, and three in Austin. Nineteen of the movers came from private practice, with one coming from an in-house position, and three coming from judicial positions (including two judges).

Two group moves were reported during the month—a move of three Financial Services partners from the Dallas office of Spencer Fane to Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, and a move of two Energy Transactional Partners from the Dallas office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges to Winston & Strawn. Other firms reporting at least two lateral hires included:

  • Frost Brown Todd (Dallas, Houston)
  • Haynes and Boone (Dallas, Houston)
  • Norton Rose Fulbright (Dallas, Houston)
  • Winstead (Dallas, Austin)

Seven of the 23 lawyers (30.4%) were women, with only one entering as partner. That compared to 15 of the 16 men who joined their new firms as partners.

Energy was the leading practice area represented, with five practitioners. Other active practice areas included:

  • Banking/Finance (3)
  • Insurance (2)
  • Litigation (2)
  • Real Estate (2)
